Meet George, a 6-year old boy whose heart has been an inspiration to many
Feb 27, 2022Meet George, a 6-year old boy whose heart has been an inspiration to many. George’s mother, Jessica, tells the story of her son who was prenatally diagnosed with a congenital heart defect and the journey the impact it has had on their lives.
When I was 20 weeks pregnant with George, it was discovered that he had Tricuspid Atresia (HRHS). Our world was turned upside down. All information seemed scary and not very hopeful. It became difficult to enjoy pregnancy and plan for his birth. We kept hoping for a miracle, but George was born with “half a heart”.
In the first 6 months of his life, he had 3 open heart surgeries, numerous cath procedures and innumerable doctors’ appointments. He had long hospital stays. There were many dark days full of tears and fear that he wouldn’t make it or have a “normal” life. I didn’t feel like I could adequately care for a child with his medical condition.
We received so much strength from the people around us. We connected with families all over the world through social media who had children like George.
We trusted the talented team of medical professionals who have dedicated theirs lives to caring for children with CHD’s. Because all of George’s surgeries are palliative, we continue to navigate through this world. George is now 6 years old. He is in kindergarten, he snow skies, he loves to fish, and snorkel in the ocean.
In the beginning of this journey, I never could have imagined that there would be more normal days than difficult days, but George lives a full, happy life. George has helped our family to live more fully, to appreciate every day, and to love fiercely.
